How to Write a CV That Gets Noticed by Jamaican Employers

A strong CV is often your first opportunity to make a good impression on an employer. It should quickly explain who you are, what you can do and why your experience matches the vacancy. Jamaican employers may receive many applications for one position, so a clear and focused CV can help you stand out.

Start with accurate contact information

Place your full name, telephone or WhatsApp number, professional email address and parish or general location near the top. Check every detail before submitting your application. Avoid including sensitive information such as your TRN, banking details, passport number or other private identification numbers.

Use a clear professional summary

Write a short paragraph of three to five lines that describes your experience, strongest skills and the type of opportunity you are seeking. Tailor this summary to the vacancy instead of using the same general statement for every application.

Highlight relevant skills

Include skills that directly support the position. These may include customer service, administration, sales, bookkeeping, construction, caregiving, computer proficiency, hospitality, driving, communication, leadership or technical abilities. Be truthful and prepared to explain how you have used each skill.

Present your experience clearly

List your most recent or relevant positions first. For each role, include the employer, job title, location, dates and a few concise responsibilities or achievements. Use action words such as managed, assisted, prepared, maintained, improved, organized or supported.

Include education and certifications

Add relevant schools, training programmes, licences, certificates and professional qualifications. State the correct name of each qualification and the institution that issued it. If you are currently studying, clearly mark the programme as in progress.

Keep the layout professional

  • Use a readable font and consistent headings.
  • Keep spacing, dates and bullet points uniform.
  • Aim for one or two pages unless your field requires more detail.
  • Check spelling and grammar carefully.
  • Save and send your CV as a PDF so the formatting remains consistent.
  • Use a professional filename, such as Firstname-Lastname-CV.pdf.

Tailor your CV for every application

Read the job description carefully and identify the qualifications, duties and skills the employer considers most important. Adjust your summary, skills and experience to emphasize the parts of your background that genuinely match the role. Never copy requirements into your CV if you do not possess them.
